As Ontario’s waste landscape evolves under EPR, the focus is shifting beyond curbside recycling, toward maximizing recovery from mixed waste, organics, and C&D streams.
A strong example of what’s possible comes from Québec City, where Machinex implemented an advanced Organic Material Recovery System (OMRC) designed to recover organics directly from municipal solid waste.
With a capacity of 240,000 tons/year of MSW and 86,600 tons/year of source-separated organics, the system leverages an innovative approach: citizens place organics in purple bags, which are then identified and recovered using cutting-edge optical sorting technology.
This project demonstrates how municipalities can significantly increase diversion rates, even from traditionally challenging waste streams, while moving closer to a circular economy.
