This award recognizes a W2RO member organization annually for innovative ideas and techniques that have positively impacted projects aimed at improving the quality of waste and recycling services in Ontario.
We are pleased to recognize Region of Peel – Rethinking Peel’s Multi-Residential Organics Diversion.
With 30% to 40% of garbage from multi-residential buildings made up of food and organic waste, Peel saw an opportunity to divert this material from landfill and treat it as a valuable resource.
In 2024, Peel secured council approval to move forward with a mixed waste processing diversion program targeting organic waste in multi-residential settings.
That same year, Peel began designing two new voluntary pilot programs for multi-residential buildings.
Launched in 2025, the pilots included 16 properties—eight testing a dedicated organics chute and eight testing a coloured bag system.
A key innovation in this round was empowering property managers to lead resident engagement, distribute pilot materials, and encourage participation in the program.
