The Assessment of Economic Impacts of Ontario Waste Management Sector report highlights the sector is a significant contributor to the economy. In 2023, the combined operating and capital expenditures of Ontario’s waste management sector is estimated to be $5.8 billion in gross domestic product (GDP), $2.8 billion in Ontario labour income, and 36,639 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs within the province. Additionally, the waste sector generated $5.6 billion, in direct, indirect and induced impacts of $9.6 billion in output. The industry offers average annual wages of about $76,600 and is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises, with 96% of firms employing fewer than 100 workers.
Domestic solutions are needed to reduce the impact of price increases or closures on the Ontario waste landscape. The opportunity cost is significant. In 2023, exported waste for disposal meant foregone direct, indirect and induced economic activity of $225 million in output, $136 million in GDP, $66.6 million in labour income, and $20.9 million in taxes that could have been retained in-province. Onshoring our waste management system in Ontario by reducing reliance on the United States would help to create an additional 857 FTE jobs.
