W2RO CEO, Ashley De Souza visited Cambium Inc. Cambium is doing their part to close the loop on Concrete Testing Waste. Cambium has turned a long-standing industry challenge into a measurable win for sustainability. Our recycling program for plastic cylinder molds—used daily in our CCIL-certified materials testing lab—keeps thousands of single-use plastics out of landfills, proving that sustainable practices can work at scale in construction testing.
The challenge was clear: every concrete cylinder sample requires its own mold. With more than 10,000 samples tested each year, that meant 10,000 plastic molds cut open and discarded after a single use. Traditional recycling wasn’t the answer—most molds were ultimately tossed as waste.
That changed with our partnership with EFS Plastics in Listowel, ON. Together, we developed a recyclable, CSA-approved mold that can be used once, then recycled into brand-new molds. The result is a true circular system: about 10,000 molds saved from landfill annually, with a steady supply of ready-to-use molds delivered in under a week to meet project demands.
This program is more than waste diversion—it’s industry innovation. By proving that discarded molds can be re-purposed into high-quality, CSA-approved products, we’ve set a new standard for circular waste management in the construction testing and inspection sector. Scalable, efficient, and future-focused, our program shows how practical innovation can drive both environmental and economic impact.
A big thank you to Stephanie Reeder, Mike Piontek, Hayley Archibald, John Watson, Devin Brough and Becky Yarnell for having Ashley out!
