The State of Waste in Ontario: Landfill Report highlights that in 2024, Ontario generated approximately 16.88 million tonnes of waste, with 12.75 million tonnes disposed in landfills. Of this total, 73% (9.31 million tonnes) was managed within Ontario, while 27% (3.44 million tonnes) was exported to the United States, primarily Michigan, New York and Ohio. Ontario has an estimated 125.61 million tonnes of approved landfill capacity.
The report also highlights:
- While maintaining exports to US landfills, average remaining capacity of landfills will be depleted by 2037
- If the borders close to Ontario’s waste, Ontario will run out of landfill capacity by 2034
- 57% of the province’s remaining capacity is held by just seven landfills (3 public and 4 private), while 85% is concentrated in the largest 15 sites (6 private and 9 public)
- Private landfills now account for 50.5% of Ontario’s remaining capacity, reflecting municipalities’ growing reliance on private operators due to land constraints and cost efficiency
